New Orleans Attractions and Family Fun - Aquarium of Americas in New OrleansWith more than 15,000 specimens of fish, birds and reptiles in their natural habitat, and over a million gallons of water, The Aquarium of the Americas (affiliated with the Audubon Zoological Gardens) is one of the most impressive and innovative aquariums in the world.

Located on the Mississippi River bank in scenic Woldenberg Riverfront Park, the Aquarium of the Americas hosts daily excursions into the major aquatic habitats of North and South America.

Popular permanent exhibits take visitors on a breath-taking walk through the Caribbean Sea, the Amazon Rainforest, the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.

New Orleans Attractions and Family Fun - Aquarium of Americas in New OrleansIn the Caribbean Reef exhibit, you can walk through a majestic tunnel surrounded by the colors of corals and rare tropical fish. Then on to the Rainforest, where waterfalls and tropical birds mimic the ambiance of the mist covered Amazon. Treasures of the local aquatic environment, including sea birds, sea turtles, and a rare white alligator, are abound in the Mississippi River Gallery. A giant oil rig replica in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit houses one of the world’s largest and most diverse shark collections. The Aquarium’s newest permanent exhibit, "UFOs of the deep," features more than 11 species of warm and cold-water jellyfish, the largest of its kind in the world. Interactive presentations for the family are held hourly.

The Aquarium also houses New Orleans only IMAX-30 Theater. Audiences are immersed into the 3D action of underwater explorations, desert canyon adventures, the rebirth of the dinosaurs, and more. All on a screen four times the size of conventional movie screens. The IMAX is both educational and entertaining.

A riverboat cruise to the Audubon Zoological Gardens is also available, call (504) 861-2537 for more information.
