Dancing
New
Orleans has just what you need if
you want to dance the night away!!
These places will have you
sweating to the best and most
popular hip hop and dance music
out there today. Take a look
at the clubs below to learn what
the hottest places to "get
down" in The Big Easy!!
Gimmick’s
8200 Willow St.
(504) 866-9549
One
of New Orleans' oldest surviving
music clubs, Jimmy’s was
recently sold by its namesake
owner (Jimmy Anselmo) and now
operates primarily as a dance club
for the college-age crowd. New
lighting, PA system, and a wall
separating the bar from the dance
floor and stage are a much-needed
improvement for this club. While
Gimmick’s is going to be
primarily a dance club, occasional
live shows will continue to
provide an outlet for new bands
(from punk to funk) in the New
Orleans area.
Audubon
Hotel & Bar
1225 Saint Charles Ave.
(504) 568-1319
Quite
possibly the strangest bar in New
Orleans. If the sight of 400 pound
prostitutes and transvestites in
oversized diapers is a
retina-burning turn-off for some
potential patrons, this bar makes
up for it with the some of the
best mixed drinks in town.
Comfortable sofas and chairs line
walls and floor surrounding the
dance floor where some of the best
MC’s in town can be heard. The
Audubon Hotel is open 24 hours a
day.
Audubon Tavern II
6100 Magazine St.
(504) 895-9702
ATII’s
is the polar opposite of the
Audubon Hotel, so try not to
confuse the names. ATII’s is the
college aged dance club for rowdy,
and occasionally belligerent kids.
The bar consists of one large main
room/dance floor where loud and
popular radio songs set the
ambiance of drunken mayhem (or
boredom, depending on the night).
If you like to drink domestic beer
from a can while screaming wildly
until you lose the last of your
inhibitions, visit the Audubon
Tavern II.
The Metro
310 Howard Ave.
(504) 568-1700
Be
prepared to dress up and spend a
lot of money at the Metro. This
Warehouse District dance club is a
classy as they get. Inside this
enormous and elegant space are
five bars and two dance floors. It
is not uncommon to see valets
pulling off in the various Ferrari’s
and Porche’s of the Metro’s
patrons. For all its great music
and unique ambiance, the Metro is
well worth the $10 cover charge.
Gold Mine Saloon
705 Dauphine St.
(504) 586-0745
Just
a block off Bourbon Street, this
is the perfect dance club for the
18-25 crowd. Not a particularly
fancy club, the Goldmine’s
patrons hold to no particular
dress code other than tight
clothes that look good to the
opposite sex. The soundtrack,
ranging from Euro to Latin to
Hip-Hop, is always grinding. The
Goldmine is a New Orleans staple
for young locals and
out-of-towners to set their
groove.
Rubyfruit Jungle
640 Frenchmen St.
(504) 947-4000
The
Jungle is the only lesbian dance
club in the French Quarter. The
Jungle offers drink specials
nightly and excellent music. This
is not a women-only club, but it
is not rare for men to be made to
feel uncomfortable. If you’re a
girl and you like to dance, check
it out.
Cat’s Meow
701 Bourbon St.
(504) 523 1157
The
ever-popular Cat’s Meow on
Bourbon Street is teeming with
tourists on almost any night of
the week. Most of the dancing is
done to an obnoxiously loud
Kareoke show, where drunken
patrons get on stage to sing and
dance their favorite tunes. If
your expectations for the night
don’t surpass getting really
drunk, drunk enough so you too can
sing "Staying Alive,"
then you will have a blast at the
Cat’s Meow. Be warned, drinks
are expensive, so the requisite
pre-gaming is recommended before
entering.
735 Nightclub and Bar
735 Bourbon St.
(504) 581-6740
The
735 Club is currently the most
trendy dance club in town. This is
the kind of club where tall
bouncers in dark sunglasses let
you in at their discretion. The
club is basically a small room
with very high ceilings and smoke
machines. New Orleans wealthy
young adults, complete with
glow-sticks in their mouths, are
the typical patrons. There is a $5
cover charge on most nights.
