Film
& Art
New
Orleans is a great place of
culture and art. The Bayou
City offers some of the best film
houses and movie theaters. Check out cult films
in a cinema pub, or check out
local entertainment as these
theaters are turned into live
music venues. How about just
going to the movies? Well New
Orleans has plenty to choose from so
you can see your anticipated
blockbuster hit on the silver
screen. Take a look below
for the best available movie
theaters and film houses in New
Orleans.
Movie
Pitchers
3941 Bienville St.
(504) 488-8881
Movie
Pitchers, opened in early 1990, is
New Orleans only existing
cinema/pub. The main focus of this
theater is independent, foreign,
and cult films. Besides the
movies, Movie Pitchers offers live
bands, comedy shows, local plays
and a free art gallery year round.
While watching the events, you may
relax at a homestyle sofa with you
feet propped up, or sit at a
dinner table for two. They offer
twenty different beers, daiquiris,
hard liquor, and a large
assortment of delicious food not
typically found in a movie
theater. Movie Pitchers is
definitely worth checking out.
Prytania
Theater
5339 Prytania St.
(504) 891-2787
The
Prytania Theatre, founded in the
early 1900s, is the last remaining
single-screen suburban theatre in
Louisiana. The current owners have
gone through an exorbitant amount
of work to bring out the unique,
old-fashioned feel of this
historical landmark. This is a
great place to see a film.
The
Palace Theatre
1200 Elmwood Park Blvd.
Harahan, LA. 70123
(504) 734-2020
Just
a ten minute drive from the city,
the Palace Theater is New Orleans
answer to the mega-movie theater
experience. The Palace has twenty
screens, elevated seating, and
incredible audio. This is not your
best bet for finding many
independent or art films, but if a
good, old-fashioned multi-million
dollar Hollywood movie is
currently playing anywhere,
chances are it’ll be playing at
the Palace.
Canal
Place
333 Canal St.
(504) 581 5400
This
theater primarily shows
independent and art film. The
screens are larger than that of
its main competitor, Movie
Pitchers, and while there is no
alcohol, the viewing experience is
excellent.
New
Orleans Film and Video Festival
The New Orleans Film and Video
Society:
821 Gravier St.
(504) 523-3818.
Every
Fall, the New Orleans Film and
Video Festival presents some of
the best new art-house premieres
and resurrected film classics for
showing on the big screen. Past
premieres have included
"Shine", "Eve’s
Bayou", and "Waking Ned
Divine." The festival runs
for seven days and includes panel
discussions and social events, as
well as the Festival Gala. Shows
are held at Canal Place's Landmark
and Southern Repertory Theatres,
and the Prytania Theatre.
