  NEW ORLEANS > SPECTATOR SPORTS

Spectator Sports

Spectator Sports--Louisiana SuperdomeIf you have a specific spectator sport that's dear to your heart and part of your regular schedule, you'll probably find it in New Orleans. For pro action, catch the NFL's New Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome. For baseball, it’s the minor league Zephyrs. Ice hockey in Louisiana? Check out the hard-hitting New Orleans Brass in their new arena, or go see the Storm play high-intensity soccer. For the college action, Tulane University offers a wide range of spectator sports.

SAINTS FOOTBALL

In 1966 the NFL franchise was awarded to New Orleans on All Saints Day, hence the name the New Orleans Saints. In the 44 years between that first Saints game and the new millennium, they have had a winning season only five times (in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, and 1992). Despite this undeniable tendency towards losing, the New Orleans Saints are pushing forward still, with an ever increasing and dedicated flock of loyal fans. After 4 years with Mike Ditka as head coach, and four losing seasons of football, the Saints are hoping for a comeback in the next few years with the recent hiring Jim Hasslet as head coach and the continuing improvements of running back Ricky Williams. The Saints home is the Louisiana Superdome. The Superdome, opened in 1975, is a true architectural wonder. It compromises over 125,000,000 cubic feet of interior space, and seats over 75,000, making it the largest domed arena in the world. The Superdome itself is reason enough to head out and see a game.

ZEPHYRS BASEBALL

The New Orleans Zephyrs were originally the Colorado Zephyrs until, in 1992, when Denver landed a professional team, New Orleans purchased the Zephyrs. On April 8, 1993, the first New Orleans Zephyrs game was played in Indianapolis. After four seasons at the University of New Orleans’ Privateer Park, the Zephyrs finally have a stadium to call their own. They are playing their third season in beautiful new Zephyr Field, a multi-purpose 10,000-seat facility that opened April 11, 1997. The team's move into Zephyr Field was a catalyst to a record-breaking season in 1999. New Orleans also experienced the largest attendance increase in Minor League Baseball, drawing 507, 164 fans in 1999. The regular season runs from mid March until early September. You can catch Zephyrs Radio on WWL-AM 870 and WSMB-AM 1350.

Listen up soccer fans, the Storm is finally here. The professional soccer team the New Orleans Storm will begin its first season in the year 2000 on April 21 at home against the Tennessee Rhythm. Eight days later it will meet the San Diego Flash. The Storm will play at the new Zephyr Stadium from mid April until early September. All home games start at 7:30 p.m.

BRASS HOCKEY

If you are looking for hard-hitting fast-paced entertainment, check out New Orleans Brass hockey. After years of playing in Armstrong Park, the Brass have a new home next to the Super Dome in the newly opened New Orleans Arena. Though the arena was designed to eventually hold concerts and basketball games, hockey was the first priority. That may be why, consciously or not, the metaphorical core of the architectural concept seems to have been ice. The regular season starts in mid October and goes until early April.

Ticket Master: (504) 522-5555

Tickets Range in Price from $8 - $20

TULANE GREEN WAVE

For exciting college action, check out New Orleans own Tulane University. Tulane offers a wide variety of spectator sports including football, basketball (men’s and women’s), baseball, tennis, soccer and volleyball. Most events are held in the Fogleman Arena on Tulane’s Uptown campus, however a few basketball and all of the football games are held in the Superdome. Tulane has always been a contender in college athletics, and the games are generally high energy.
